Rain98 currently has two Steam products that answer different technical questions. The unreleased base game is AppID 3498720. The playable Rain98 Demo is AppID 3738760, released October 16, 2026. Install, system-requirement, controller, and save-support checks must begin with the AppID because a figure displayed on one store page should not be silently applied to the other.
Use the system requirements comparison before downloading. It records the matching hardware values currently shown on both official listings while keeping their AppIDs and release states separate. There is no supported macOS or Linux build on the current Steam listings, and Steam Deck compatibility for the Demo is still marked Unknown rather than Verified, Playable, or Unsupported.
System requirements
Check the matching hardware rows for both current listings while keeping the Coming Soon base game separate from the playable Demo.
Controller support
Interpret Steam's full-controller metadata, establish a one-device baseline, and diagnose prompt or activity-specific input failures.
Steam Deck
Separate Valve's current Unknown rating from one independent positive Demo hands-on, then run a practical device test.
Install identity
Confirm AppID 3738760 for the playable Demo and AppID 3498720 for the Coming Soon base-game page.
Save care
Close through the game menu, let Steam Cloud finish, and never assume Demo-to-retail transfer.
Identify the product before troubleshooting
Open the game’s Steam properties or store URL and inspect the numeric AppID. If the product is playable on October 18, 2026, it should be the Demo at 3738760; the base game at 3498720 remains Coming Soon. This distinction resolves many apparent contradictions about download size, chapter access, and whether a Play button should exist.
Steam lists both products for Windows 10 with the same current requirements. Each official page names an Intel Core i5-8250U, 8 GB RAM, Intel UHD Graphics 620, and 6 GB available space at minimum; each recommends an Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 1060, and 8 GB available space. The matching values do not make the products interchangeable: AppID 3498720 remains an unreleased base game, while AppID 3738760 is the playable Demo.
When reporting a problem, include the product name, AppID, build date if Steam exposes one, operating-system version, CPU, GPU, RAM, input device, and whether files were verified. “Rain98 will not start” without the product identity can send another player toward the wrong executable or storage figure.
Choose a realistic hardware target
The Demo’s minimum listing is the best public baseline for the build players can run now. Meeting a minimum usually means the software is expected to launch in an intended basic configuration; it does not promise a particular resolution, frame rate, quiet fan profile, or hitch-free experience. No official Rain98 performance targets are published on the current store pages.
Both current listings recommend a GeForce GTX 1060. Treat that as the published recommended device, not a benchmark guarantee for every laptop, driver, resolution, or future chapter. Integrated graphics share system memory and can be sensitive to power mode, heat, background applications, and driver age. Plug a laptop into power and select its high-performance profile before diagnosing severe slowdown.
Both official pages currently list 6 GB available space at minimum and 8 GB as recommended. Use those figures for the Demo you can install today, but leave extra working room for Steam and Windows. Because the base game is unreleased, its matching storage row is provisional and can change before launch.
Read the technical status at a glance
Prepare storage without relying on the headline number
“Available space” is free capacity requested by the listing. It is not a measured final folder size, download payload, or peak patching requirement. Steam can need additional working space while unpacking or updating files. Leave more free space than the published minimum, especially on the system drive if Steam or Windows also uses it for temporary data.
Install the Demo to a healthy Steam library, allow the download to finish, and launch once before moving its folder. If Steam reports corrupt or missing files, use Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Verification can replace altered or incomplete files, but it does not erase the need to inspect driver, antivirus, storage, and overlay conflicts.
Do not delete saves as a first troubleshooting step. Back up any locally visible data before making changes, and close Steam before manually copying files. Steam Cloud support does not establish that the Demo save will import into the final base game. No current official statement should be read as a retail save-transfer promise.
Set up input for mixed presentation styles
Rain98 moves between visual-novel dialogue, apartment interactions, activity interfaces, and isometric exploration. A control that advances text may not be the same action used to inspect a room or move through Shibuya. Read the live prompt after each presentation change.
For a controller, connect the device before launch, confirm that Steam detects it, and begin with the default layout. If the game shows the wrong glyphs or repeats inputs, temporarily disable overlapping remappers rather than stacking several layout tools. The Demo store page specifically lists DualSense support, but that does not mean every third-party controller will use PlayStation glyphs or identical features.
For keyboard play, keep the mouse available until the current scene reveals its interaction model. If focus seems lost, click once inside the game window and test the displayed action. Avoid publishing a complete key map unless it has been checked in the current public build; bindings and prompts can change during pre-release updates.
Diagnose a launch or performance problem in order
First confirm AppID 3738760 and Windows 10 or a later compatible Windows environment for the current Demo. Restart Steam, finish pending Windows or graphics-driver updates, and verify the files. Then close capture overlays, injector tools, and unnecessary background applications one group at a time. A clean comparison is more useful than changing five settings at once.
For low performance, note the scene, resolution, display mode, power profile, and whether the machine is using its integrated or discrete GPU. Lower in-game options one step at a time if the build exposes them. A slow first traversal is not enough to publish a universal fix; reproduce the issue after a restart and record whether it follows a specific activity, transition, or video.
If a controller fails, test Steam’s controller page and one other game before changing Rain98 files. If text or save behavior fails, record the selected language and Steam Cloud state. The Demo advertises nine interface languages, and a display problem can be language-specific without being a general rendering failure.
Recheck at each release boundary
The public Demo can receive content or technical updates while the base game remains unreleased. Revisit Demo Updates before treating an old workaround as current. Store requirements, supported features, and Deck status can change independently of story content.
At base-game launch, discard any assumption that the Demo requirement table, storage request, save location, or performance profile is final. Re-read AppID 3498720, verify the downloaded product, and make a fresh comparison. The safest technical guide is one that keeps each number attached to its product and check date.
